Permeability of rocks:
When rainwater falls onto area with highly permeable rocks, more water will seep into the ground and thus there will be lesser surface runoff flowing into the river and thus the volume is smaller. However, when rainwater falls onto Area with less permeable rocks, there will be lesser amount of surface runoff seeping into the ground. Thus, there will be more surface runoff flowing into the river and hence the river volume will be greater.

Presence of vegetation:
Vegetation intercepts rain water and allow more water to be infiltrate into the ground. An abundant of vegetation, allows more water to infiltrate into the ground, thereby reducing the flow of surface runoff. As a result, there will be less surface runoff flows into the river and the volume of water will be smaller. Conversely, sparse vegetation does not allow much water to be infiltrate into the ground thus increasing the surface. As a result, more surface runoff flows into the river and the volume of the river will be greater.

size of drainage basin:
The bigger the area of the drainage basin the greater amount of water there is in the river because when the drainage area is large, there is more surface area for rain to fall on. The rain flows over the land as surface rainoff before flowing into the river. In comparison, drainage basin with smaller area usually do not
Collect as much rainwater.

In areas with distinct dry and wet seasons, the amount of water in the river fluctuates according to the amount of rainfall received during each season.
In areas that are dry, the volume of water is low throughout the year. Rivers that are found in hot and wet equatorial have a high volume of water in their channels.
